The People's Disobedience
1 “Listen, people of Israel! Today you are about to cross the Jordan River and occupy the land belonging to nations greater and more powerful than you. Their cities are large, with walls that reach the sky. 2 The people themselves are tall and strong; they are giants, and you have heard it said that no one can stand against them. 3 But now you will see for yourselves that the Lord your God will go ahead of you like a raging fire. He will defeat them as you advance, so that you will drive them out and destroy them quickly, as he promised.
4 “After the Lord your God has driven them out for you, do not say to yourselves that he brought you in to possess this land because you deserved it. No, the Lord is going to drive these people out for you because they are wicked. 5 It is not because you are good and do what is right that the Lord is letting you take their land. He will drive them out because they are wicked and because he intends to keep the promise that he made to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 6 You can be sure that the Lord is not giving you this fertile land because you deserve it. No, you are a stubborn people.
7 “Never forget how you made the Lord your God angry in the desert. From the day that you left Egypt until the day you arrived here, you have rebelled against him. 8 Even at Mount Sinai you made the Lord angry—angry enough to destroy you. 9 I went up the mountain to receive the stone tablets on which was written the covenant that the Lord had made with you. I stayed there forty days and nights and did not eat or drink anything. 10 Then the Lord gave me the two stone tablets on which he had written with his own hand what he had said to you from the fire on the day that you were gathered there at the mountain. 11 Yes, after those forty days and nights the Lord gave me the two stone tablets on which he had written the covenant.
12 “Then the Lord said to me, ‘Go down the mountain at once, because your people, whom you led out of Egypt, have become corrupt and have done evil. They have already turned away from what I commanded them to do, and they have made an idol for themselves.’
13 “The Lord also said to me, ‘I know how stubborn these people are. 14 Don't try to stop me. I intend to destroy them so that no one will remember them any longer. Then I will make you the father of a nation larger and more powerful than they are.’
15 “So I turned and went down the mountain, carrying the two stone tablets on which the covenant was written. Flames of fire were coming from the mountain. 16 I saw that you had already disobeyed the command that the Lord your God had given you, and that you had sinned against him by making yourselves a metal idol in the form of a bull-calf. 17 So there in front of you I threw the stone tablets down and broke them to pieces. 18 Then once again I lay face downward in the Lord's presence for forty days and nights and did not eat or drink anything. I did this because you had sinned against the Lord and had made him angry. 19 I was afraid of the Lord's fierce anger, because he was furious enough to destroy you; but once again the Lord listened to me. 20 The Lord was also angry enough with Aaron to kill him, so I prayed for Aaron at the same time. 21 I took that sinful thing that you had made—that metal bull-calf—and threw it into the fire. Then I broke it in pieces, ground it to dust, and threw the dust into the stream that flowed down the mountain.
22 “You also made the Lord your God angry when you were at Taberah, Massah, and Kibroth Hattaavah. 23 And when he sent you from Kadesh Barnea with orders to go and take possession of the land that he was giving you, you rebelled against him; you did not trust him or obey him. 24 Ever since I have known you, you have rebelled against the Lord.
25 “So I lay face downward in the Lord's presence those forty days and nights, because I knew that he was determined to destroy you. 26 And I prayed, ‘Sovereign Lord, don't destroy your own people, the people you rescued and brought out of Egypt by your great strength and power. 27 Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and do not pay any attention to the stubbornness, wickedness, and sin of this people. 28 Otherwise, the Egyptians will say that you were unable to take your people into the land that you had promised them. They will say that you took your people out into the desert to kill them, because you hated them. 29 After all, these are the people whom you chose to be your own and whom you brought out of Egypt by your great power and might.’
1 „Klausies, Israēl, tu šodien celsies pāri Jardānai, lai uzvarētu tautas, kas lielākas un stiprākas nekā tu, tāpat arī lielas un līdz pat debesīm nocietinātas pilsētas,
2 Liela un gapa auguma tautu Ēnaka bērnus, par kuriem tu zini un esi dzirdējis: „Kas gan var pastāvēt Ēnaka bērnu priekšā?“
3 Un tu šodien atzīsi, ka tas Kungs, tavs Dievs, ir tas pats, kas iet tavā priekšā kā rijēja uguns: Viņš tos iznīcinās un nospiedīs ceļos tavā priekšā, ka tu varēsi tos izdzīt un steigšus tos iznīcināsi, kā tas Kungs tev to ir sacījis.
4 Kad nu tas Kungs, tavs Dievs, tos dzīs ārā tev pa priekšu, tad nedomā pats savā prātā un nesaki: Tas Kungs mani ir atvedis manas taisnības un nopelnu dēļ, lai es šo zemi iemantoju, bet gan tieši šo tautu bezdievības dēļ tas Kungs tās tagad dzen ārā tavu acu priekšā.
5 Ne tavas taisnības, nedz tavas sirds skaidrības dēļ tu nenāc, lai iemantotu viņu zemi, bet šo tautu bezdievības dēļ tas Kungs, tavs Dievs, tās dzen ārā tevis labā, lai apstiprinātu to vārdu, ko tas Kungs ar zvērestu bija devis taviem tēviem—Ābrahāmam, īzākam un Jēkabam.
6 Tad nu zini, ka tas Kungs, tavs Dievs, tev nedod par īpašumu šo auglīgo zemi tavas taisnības dēļ, jo tu esi stūrgalvīga tauta.
7 Piemini un neaizmirsti, ka tu to Kungu, savu Dievu, esi tuksnesī ļoti sadusmojisj sākot ar dienu, kad tu iznāci no Ēģiptes zemes, līdz kamēr jūs nonācāt šinī vietā, jūs esat bijuši nepaklausīgi un pat pretojušies tam Kungam.
8 Jau pie Horeba jūs aizdevāt tam Kungam lielas dusmas, un tas Kungs uz jums apskaitās un gribēja jūs iznīcināt.
9 Kad es uzkāpu kalnā, lai saņemtu akmens plāksnes, tās derības plāksnes, ko tas Kungs ar jums bija noslēdzis, tad es paliku kalnā četrdesmit dienas un četrdesmit naktis, un es netiku ēdis ne reizes nedz arī dzēris ūdeni.
10 Tad tas Kungs man deva abas akmens plāksnes, Dieva pirksta aprakstītas, un uz kupām bija visi tie vārdi, ko tas Kungs ar jums kalnā bija runājis no uguns liesmām tai dienā, kad draudze bija sasaukta.
11 Kad nu pēc četrdesmit dienām un četrdesmit naktīm tas Kungs man deva abas akmens plāksnes, tās derības plāksnes,
12 Tad tas Kungs man sacīja: „Celies, kāp steigšus lejā no šīs vietas, jo tava tauta, ko tu esi izvedis no Ēģiptes, ir apgrēkojusies: viņi jo drīzi vien ir atkāpušies no ceļa, ko Es tiem pavēlēju iet, un sev darinājuši lietu elka tēlu.“
13 Vēl tas Kungs runāja ar mani, sacīdams: „Es esmu novērojis šo tautu, un, redzi, tā ir nepakļāvīga tauta.
14 Laid mani, Es tos iznīcināšu, un viņu vārdu Es izdeldēšu no pasaules, bet tevi Es darīšu par lielāku un stiprāku tautu, nekā viņi ir.“
15 Tad es pagriezos un nokāpu no kalna, bet kalns dega ugunīs, un abas divas derības plāksnes bija man abās rokās,
16 Un es skatījos, un, redzi, jūs bijāt nogrēkojušies pret to Kungu, savu Dievu, jūs bijāt sev darinājuši lietu teļa attēlu, jūs bijāt jo ātri novirzījušies no ceļa, ko tas Kungs bija jums pavēlējis iet.
17 Tad es sagrābu abas akmens plāksnes, izlaidu tās no savām rokām, nosviedu zemē un sasitu jūsu acu priekšā.
18 Pēc tam es nometos tā Kunga priekšā kā iepriekš—četrdesmit dienas un četrdesmit naktis, es neēdu maizi un nedzēru ūdeni visu jūsu grēku dēļ, ko jūs bijāt sev uzkrāvuši, darinādami šo ļauno tēlu, tā to Kungu sakaitinādami;
19 Jo es baiļojos par dusmām tin bardzību, ko tas Kungs turēja uz jums, gribēdams jūs iznīcināt; bet tas Kungs arī šoreiz mani paklausīja.
20 Un tas Kungs ari ļoti dusmojās uz Āronu un gribēja viņu iznīcināt, bet es tai laikā iestājos ar lūgšanām arī par Āronu.
21 Bet jūsu grēku darbu, teļa attēlu, ko jūs bijāt izveidojuši, to es sadedzināju ugunī, un es to sadauzīju un samalu, kamēr tas palika par putekļiem; un šos putekļus es iemetu strautā, kas tek no kalna.
22 Arī pie Taberas, pie Masas un pie Kārību Kapiem jūs to Kungu bijāt apkaitinājuši;
23 Un kad tas Kungs jūs sūtīja prom no Kadeš-Barneas, teikdams: „Dodieties uz augšu un iegūstiet to zemi, ko Es esmu jums devis!“ —arī tad jūs turējāties pretī tā Kunga, sava Dieva, pavēlei, Viņam neuzticējāties un ne-klausījāt Viņa balsij.
24 Jūs esat bijuši kurnētāji pret to Kungu, sākot no tās dienas, kopš es jūs pazīstu!
25 Kad es nu gulēju tā Kunga priekšā pie zemes, četrdesmit dienas un četrdesmit naktis, kur es biju nometies, tāpēc ka tas Kungs bija sacījis, ka Viņš jūs iznīcināšot,
26 Tad es pielūdzu to Kungu un sacīju: „Ak Kungs, mūsu Dievs! Neizdeldē šo savu tautu un savu īpašumu, ko Tu pats ar savu lielo varu esi izglābis un kufu Tu esi ar stipru roku izvedis no Ēģiptes zemes!
27 Piemini savus kalpus—Ābrahāmu, īzāku un Jēkabu, un neuzlūko viņu stūrgalvību nedz arī viņu bezdievību un viņu grēku darbus,
28 Lai tā zeme, no kurienes Tu mūs esi izvedis, nesaka: „Tas nebija tā Kunga spēkos, lai tos ievestu tai zemē, ko Viņš pats tiem bija ar vārdiem solījis, un tādēļ ka Viņš tos bija ienīdis, Viņš tos izveda tuksnesī, lai tiem liktu tur mirt!“
29 Bet tie taču ir tava tauta un tavs īpašums, ktņu Tu pats esi izvedis ar savu lielo spēku un ar savu izstiepto elkoni.“
