1 Gileādietis Jefta bija stiprs karavīrs, kaut arī netikles dēls; viņa tēvs bija kāds gileādietis.
2 Kad nu šā gileādieša paša sieva bija viņam dzemdējusi dēlus un kad šīs sievas dēli pieauga, tad tie izdzina Jeftu un tam sacīja: „Tu gan nemantosi nenieka sava tēva namā, jo tu esi citas sievas dēls!“
3 Tad Jefta bēga no saviem brāļiem un apmetās dzīvot Tobas zemē; ap Jeftu sapulcējās dažādi nelieši un gāja kopā ar viņu sņot.
4 Pēc kāda laika amonieši sāka karot ar Israēlu.
5 Kad nu amonieši sāka uzbrukumu pret Israēlu, tad Gileāda vecaji devās ceļā, lai atvestu Jeftu no Tobas zemes,
6 Un tie sacīja Jeftam: „Nāc un topi tu mums par vadoni, jo mēs kājosim pret amoniešiem!“
7 Bet Jefta sacīja Gileāda vecajiem: „Vai jūs mani neienīdāt un neizdzināt mani no mana tēva nama? Kāpēc jūs tagad nākat pie manis, kad jums ir bēdu laiki?“
8 Tad Gileāda vecaji sacīja Jeftam: „Tāpēc jau mēs atkal pie tevis atgriežamies, nāc mums līdzi, mēs kājosim ar Amona dēliem, un tev būs būt mums par vadoni visiem Gileāda iedzīvotājiem!“
9 Tad Jefta sacīja Gileāda vecajiem: „Jūs esat atkal pie manis atnākuši, lai vestu kaju pret Amona dēliem. Bet kad tas Kungs tos nodos manās rokās, vai tad es arī būšu jums par galvu?“
10 Tad Gileāda vecaji sacīja Jeftam: „Lai tas Kungs mūsu vidū dzird, ka mēs lietu izkārtosim tieši tā, kā tu to esi nupat prasījis.“
11 Tad Jefta gāja kopā ar Gileāda vecajiem, un tauta viņu iecēla sev par priekšnieku un par kajavadoni, un Jefta cēla visu savu lietu tā Kunga priekšā Micpā.
12 Un Jefta nosūtīja vēstnešus pie amoniešu ķēniņa, teikdams: „Ko tev no manis vajaga, ka tu esi nācis un lauzies manā zemē, lai sāktu kaju?“
13 Tad amoniešu ķēniņš atbildēja Jeftas sūtņiem: „Tāpēc, ka Israēls ir atņēmis manu zemi, kad viņš atnāca no Ēģiptes, sākot no Arnonas un līdz Jabokai un Jardānai; tagad nu atdod man to ar labu!“
14 Bet Jefta sūtīja atkal vēstnešus pie amoniešu ķēniņa
15 Un lika tam teikt: „Tā saka Jefta: Israēls nav ņēmis ne Moāba zemi, ne amoniešu zemi,
16 Jo, iznākot ārā no Ēģiptes, Israēls gāja pa tuksnesi līdz Niedju jūjai un nonāca Kadešā.
17 Un Israēls tanī laikā nosūtīja vēstnešus pie Ēdoma ķēniņa, teikdams: „Atļauj mums iziet caur tavu zemi!“ Bet Ēdoma ķēniņš neuzklausīja lūgumu. Un arī pie Moāba ķēniņa viņš sūtīja, bet arī tas to negribēja. Un tā Israēlam vajadzēja palikt Kadešā.
18 Un pēc tam viņš pārstaigāja tuksnesi un apgāja Ēdoma zemei un Moāba zemei apkārt un nonāca apgabalā pret austrumiem no Moāba zemes; un tur tas uzcēla savas teltis viņpus Arnonas, bet tie nemaz arī neienāca Moāba robežās, jo Arnona ir moābiešu robeža.
19 Tad Israēls sūtīja vēstnešus pie amoriešu ķēniņa Sichona, ķujš kā ķēniņš valdīja Hešbonā, un Israēls tam teica: „Mēs, uz savu ceļa mērķi iedami, gribam iziet caur tavu zemi.“
20 Tomēr Sichons neuzticējās Israēlam, lai atļautu viņam šķērsot savus novadus, bet sapulcināja visu savu kajotāju saimi, apmetās nometnē pie Jachcas un uzbruka Israēlam.
21 Bet tas Kungs, Israēla Dievs, nodeva Sichonu un visu viņa karotāju saimi Israēla rokā, ka tie tos sakāva; tā Israēls iemantoja it visu amoriešu zemi un to ari apdzīvo.
22 Un tie ieguva īpašumā visu amoriešu robežu apgabalu no Arnonas līdz Jabokai un no tuksneša līdz Jardānai.
23 Un tā nu tas Kungs, Israēla Dievs, ir izdzinis amoriešus savas Israēla tautas labā, —un tagad tu to gribi ieņemt?
24 Patiešām to, ko tavs dievs Kā-rnošs izdzīs, to tu varēsi iegūt, bet visu to apgabalu, no kūja mūsu labā izdzinis citus tas Kungs, mūsu Dievs, to mēs paši iegūsim kā mantojumu!
25 Un nu tagad, —vai tu tiešām savā taisnībā esi stiprāks nekā Moāba ķēniņš Balaks, Cipora dēls? Vai viņam jel kad ar Israēlu bijušas nesaskaņas, un vai viņš ar to ir kājojis,
26 Kamēr Israēls mita Hešbonā un tās mazpilsētās un Aroērā un tās priekšpilsētās un visās tanīs pilsētās, kas atrodas abpus Arnonas, visus šos trīs simts gadus? Kāpēc tad jūs tanī laikā necentāties tos atkal pievienot sev?
27 Es tev neesmu nodarījis nekādu pārestību, bet tu gan man nodari ļaunu, jo tu man taisies uzbrukt ar kāju. Tad lai tas Kungs pats, tas dzīvais tiesnesis, šodien tiesā starp Israēla bērniem un Amona bērniem!“
28 Bet amoniešu ķēniņš neklausījās Jeftas vārdos, ko tas bija licis viņam pavēstīt.
29 Un tā Kunga gars nāca pār Jeftu, un viņš apstaigāja Gileādu un Manasi, viņš apmeklēja arī Micpu Gileāda, un no Micpas Gileāda viņš devās pāri pret amoniešiem.
30 Un Jefta deva īpašu solījumu tam Kungam, un viņš sacīja: „Ja Tu tiešām nodosi Amona bērnus manā rokā,
31 Tad lai notiek, ka tas, kas kā pirmais iznāks no mana nama durvīm man pretim, kad es vesels atgriezīšos no cīņas ar Amona bērniem, lai tad pieder tam Kungam, un es to upurēšu kā dedzināmo upuri!“
32 Tad Jefta devās pret amoniešiem, lai vestu pret tiem kaju, un tas Kungs tos nodeva viņa rokā.
33 Un viņš tos sakāva, no Aroēra sākot līdz ceļam uz Minnitu, divdesmit pilsētas, un līdz Abel-Keramimai varen lielā kaujā; tā Amona bērni tika Israēla priekšā pazemoti.
34 Kad nu Jefta atgriezās uz Micpu savā namā, redzi, tad viņa meita iznāca viņam pretī ar rokas bungām un dejas solī; un viņa bija tā vienīgais bērns, un bez tās viņam nebija ne dēla, ne meitas.
35 Un notika, ka, tiklīdz viņš to ieraudzīja, viņš saplēsa savas drēbes un sauca: „Ak, mana meita! Tu mani lauztin salauz, kāpēc tieši tev tai jābūt, kas mani apbēdini! Bet es esmu atvēris savu muti pret to Kungu, un es tagad vairs nespēju atkāpties!“
36 Un viņa tam atbildēja: „Mīļais tēvs, ja tu savu muti esi tā Kunga priekšā atdarījis, tad dari man, kā tas no tavas mutes nācis, pēc tam kad tas Kungs tev ir ļāvis atriebties taviem ienaidniekiem, Amona bērniem!“
37 Un viņa sacīja savam tēvam: „Lai tad ar mani tā notiek, bet dod tikai man divi mēnešus laika, jo es gribu noiet kalnos un apraudāt savu jaunavību, —es pati un manas draudzenes!“
38 Un viņš sacīja: „Ej!“ Un viņš to atlaida uz diviem mēnešiem; un viņa aizgāja ar savām tikpat vecām draudze-nēm, un tās apraudāja kalnos viņas jaunavību.
39 Un pēc divu mēnešu laika notecēšanas viņa atgriezās pie sava tēva, un viņš pie tās izpildīja savu īpašo solījumu, ko viņš bija solījis; bet viņa pati vēl nepazina vīra. Un kopš tā laika tas kļuva par tikumu Israēlā,
40 Ka gadu no gada Israēla meitas dodas, lai apraudātu dziesmās gileādieša Jeftas meitu četras dienas gadā.
Jephthah
1-5 The leaders of the Gilead clan decided to ask a brave warrior named Jephthah son of Gilead to lead the attack against the Ammonites.
Even though Jephthah belonged to the Gilead clan, he had earlier been forced to leave the region where they had lived. Jephthah was the son of a prostitute, but his half brothers were the sons of his father's wife.
One day his half brothers told him, “You don't really belong to our family, so you can't have any of the family property.” Then they forced Jephthah to leave home.
Jephthah went to the country of Tob, where he was joined by a number of men who would do anything for money.
So the leaders of Gilead went to Jephthah and said, 6 “Please come back to Gilead! If you lead our army, we will be able to fight off the Ammonites.”
7 “Didn't you hate me?” Jephthah replied. “Weren't you the ones who forced me to leave my family? You're only coming to me now because you're in trouble.”
8 “But we do want you to come back,” the leaders said. “And if you lead us in battle against the Ammonites, we will make you the ruler of Gilead.”
9 “All right,” Jephthah said. “If I go back with you and the Lord lets me defeat the Ammonites, will you really make me your ruler?”
10 “You have our word,” the leaders answered. “And the Lord is a witness to what we have said.”
11 So Jephthah went back to Mizpah with the leaders of Gilead. The people of Gilead gathered at the place of worship and made Jephthah their ruler. Jephthah also made promises to them.
12 After the ceremony, Jephthah sent messengers to say to the king of Ammon, “Are you trying to start a war? You have invaded my country, and I want to know why!”
13 The king of Ammon replied, “Tell Jephthah that the land really belongs to me, all the way from the Arnon River in the south, to the Jabbok River in the north, and west to the Jordan River. When the Israelites came out of Egypt, they stole it. Tell Jephthah to return it to me, and there won't be any war.”
14 Jephthah sent the messengers back to the king of Ammon, 15 and they told him that Jephthah had said:
Israel hasn't taken any territory from Moab or Ammon. 16 When the Israelites came from Egypt, they traveled across the desert to the Red Sea and then to Kadesh. 17 They sent messengers to the king of Edom and said, “Please, let us go through your country.” But the king of Edom refused. They also sent messengers to the king of Moab, but he wouldn't let them cross his country either. And so the Israelites stayed at Kadesh.
18 A little later, the Israelites set out into the desert, going east of Edom and Moab, and camping on the eastern side of the Arnon River gorge. The Arnon is the eastern border of Moab, and since the Israelites didn't cross it, they didn't even set foot in Moab.
19 The Israelites sent messengers to the Amorite King Sihon of Heshbon. “Please,” they said, “let our people go through your country to get to our own land.”
20 Sihon didn't think the Israelites could be trusted, so he called his army together. They set up camp at Jahaz, then they attacked the Israelite camp. 21 But the Lord God helped Israel defeat Sihon and his army. Israel took over all of the Amorite land where Sihon's people had lived, 22 from the Arnon River in the south to the Jabbok River in the north, and from the desert in the east to the Jordan River in the west.
23 The messengers also told the king of Ammon that Jephthah had said:
The Lord God of Israel helped his nation get rid of the Amorites and take their land. Now do you think you're going to take over that same territory? 24 If Chemosh your god takes over a country and gives it to you, don't you have a right to it? And if the Lord takes over a country and gives it to us, the land is ours!
25 Are you better than Balak the son of Zippor? He was the king of Moab, but he didn't quarrel with Israel or start a war with us.
26 For 300 years, Israelites have been living in Heshbon and Aroer and the nearby villages, and in the towns along the Arnon River gorge. If the land really belonged to you Ammonites, you wouldn't have waited until now to try to get it back.
27 I haven't done anything to you, but it's certainly wrong of you to start a war. I pray that the Lord will show whether Israel or Ammon is in the right.
28 But the king of Ammon paid no attention to Jephthah's message.
29 Then the Lord's Spirit took control of Jephthah, and Jephthah went through Gilead and Manasseh, raising an army. Finally, he arrived at Mizpah in Gilead, where 30 he promised the Lord, “If you will let me defeat the Ammonites 31 and come home safely, I will sacrifice to you whoever comes out to meet me first.”
32 From Mizpah, Jephthah attacked the Ammonites, and the Lord helped him defeat them.
33 Jephthah and his army destroyed the 20 towns between Aroer and Minnith, and others as far as Abel-Keramim. After that, the Ammonites could not invade Israel any more.
Jephthah's Daughter
34 When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, the first one to meet him was his daughter. She was playing a tambourine and dancing to celebrate his victory, and she was his only child.
35 “Oh no!” Jephthah cried. Then he tore his clothes in sorrow and said to his daughter, “I made a sacred promise to the Lord, and I must keep it. Your coming out to meet me has broken my heart.”
36 “Father,” she said, “you made a sacred promise to the Lord, and he let you defeat the Ammonites. Now, you must do what you promised, even if it means I must die. 37 But first, please let me spend two months, wandering in the hill country with my friends. We will cry together, because I can never get married and have children.”
38 “Yes, you may have two months,” Jephthah said.
She and some other girls left, and for two months they wandered in the hill country, crying because she could never get married and have children. 39 Then she went back to her father. He did what he had promised, and she never got married.
That's why 40 every year, Israelite girls walk around for four days, weeping for Jephthah's daughter.
